I don't understand the school budget — where do I start?

You open the spreadsheet and it swims — categories, line items, numbers that explain nothing on their own. You assume the fault is yours, that you are simply bad with numbers. It is not that. The budget is not confusing because it is complex. It is confusing because it tries to answer many questions at once, and you are reading it as though it answers one. Decide your question before you touch a single cell. The real difficulty is not arithmetic. It is that you cannot fund everything, and some part of you is hoping the budget will decide that for you. It will not. You must choose what matters most, and make the numbers serve that choice.
