I miss building. Now I just manage people. What now?
You were good with your hands and eyes — building the thing itself. Now your days are calendars, other people's problems, and slides summarizing work you no longer touch. This is a loss. Say that plainly instead of pretending it doesn't sting. But look at what you actually did. You asked for this role, or you accepted it, or you kept it when you could have left. No one is forcing you to sit in a chair you secretly despise. So the real question is not 'why don't I get to build anymore.' It is 'what will I do with the job I now have.' A leader who still longs to be the maker does the job with one foot out the door. Your team feels that. Choose the work fully, or leave it fully. Half of you here helps no one — least of all yourself.
You took the role. It is not the old craft — accept that first. Your work now is judgment, time, and people, not pixels. Grieve what you left once, then stop. After that, choose: build real skill at this new work, or step back down. Do not limp along doing both badly.
What changes unlock by starting
- You stop resenting meetings and start treating them as your actual craft.
- You know within weeks whether to commit to leading or return to building.
- Your team gets clearer direction because you're no longer half-present.
- You keep a real, working connection to the craft, instead of losing it entirely.
