Is just keeping things running actually worth anything?

You keep the thing running. The deploys go out. The numbers reconcile. The handoffs happen. Nobody above you ever has to think about it. That silence feels like nothing. It is not nothing. You have started calling this service instead of maintenance. You are right to. But the habit of invisibility is hard to break. You under-report what you do because nothing broke. A team that never sees your work starts to assume it runs on its own. The fix is not noise for its own sake. It is telling the truth about what held — out loud, to the people who depend on it, including yourself.

What’s really going on

Yes — and stop waiting for someone to notice before you believe it. The work that never breaks is still work. Count what did not fail this week. Name it out loud to the people who depend on you. That is the service; claim it instead of apologizing for it.

A moveThis week, write one line in your team channel: 'Nothing broke because I did X, Y, Z before anyone asked.' Name the three things. Send it before Friday.
A moveChoose one teammate who depends on your work. Tell them directly what would have gone wrong without you — one sentence, no hedging, no 'it's probably fine.'
A moveStop apologizing for quiet weeks. A quiet week you built is not luck. Say so, even if the only person you say it to is yourself.
A moveWhen your team praises whoever fixed the fire, ask out loud: who kept this from catching fire the other fifty weeks? Then answer your own question, to the group.
A movePick one system you maintain. Write, in plain words, what breaks downstream if you stop for a month. Share it with your pod this week.

  • You stop mistaking silence for absence of work.
  • Your team begins crediting prevention, not just repair.
  • You talk about your own work without apologizing for its quietness.
  • Your pod builds a shared habit of naming invisible work before it goes unnoticed and unpaid.
