I've caught more babies than I can count — why am I running on empty?

You have caught more babies than you can count. You have stood in rooms where life began and rooms where it did not. You gave what those rooms demanded, every time. Now the well is low. This is not weakness. This is arithmetic. Here is the excuse you must refuse. A good midwife does not run on love alone. Needing rest does not mean you have failed the calling. That belief flatters you, then breaks you. No one carries this work alone for long. The ones who last let others carry it with them. What is in your power is not the size of each demand. Birth does not consult you. What is in your power is whether you name your limit before it names you, and whether your pod knows what you need before you are empty. Choose to say it now. If grief from a loss still sits heavy in you, talk to someone trained for that outside your pod. That is not defeat. It is using every resource you have.

What’s really going on

Your reserves are not infinite. Pretending otherwise only empties you faster. You cannot control what each birth demands. You can control what you carry alone, what you name before you break, and what you ask your pod to hold. Choose the third.

A moveBuild a rotation so no one takes a hard loss and a hard birth back-to-back without relief.
A moveTake the debrief after a loss or a hard birth — do not skip it because you're strong enough not to need it.
A moveChoose one person in your pod who checks on you specifically after losses, not just after busy weeks.
A moveSet a hard limit on your on-call hours, and hold each other to it without guilt.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You catch depletion before it becomes collapse.
  • Your pod knows your limits without you explaining them mid-crisis.
  • Loss stops piling up silently in you and starts being shared.
  • You keep doing the work you're suited for, longer, without burning through it.
