I've given years to trauma calls. How much longer can I do this?
You did not sign up to be endless. You signed up to help, and you have helped, call after call, year after year. That is not nothing. But somewhere along the way you started believing the job's demand on you has no edge — that a good person just keeps giving. No one has an unlimited cup. Yours is empty, or close to it, and that is not weakness. That is arithmetic. The pay is a separate fact from your worth, and you know this, but you have let them blur together. Low pay plus high cost does not mean you are owed nothing — it means the trade is bad. A bad trade is a thing you can act on. A character flaw is a thing you can only suffer under. Choose to see which one this actually is. If the weight of what you've carried on these calls feels like more than tiredness — if it sits in your body, your sleep, your temper — that is worth more than solving alone. Reach out to a counselor, a peer support line, or someone trained for this. That is not the system working on you again. That is you, taking the one action left that is fully within your power.
You will not solve this by finding more strength — you don't have an infinite supply, and no one does. The real task is to stop treating your limit as a moral failure and start treating it as information. Your limit is telling you to change the terms, not to push harder against them.
What changes unlock by starting
- A clear, written picture of what you actually give versus what you actually receive
- One real boundary set and held, not just imagined
- A concrete next step toward either changing your conditions or exiting them
- Less of the quiet belief that your exhaustion is a personal failing
