The Machine Screens My Team Now. Do I Still Matter?

The system flags who is falling behind, who might quit, who deserves the promotion. It does this before you have spoken to the person. The meeting becomes a place where you confirm what the screen already decided. This is not a fight with software. It is a slower question: what is your judgment still for? If the machine ranks and predicts, and you only approve, you have become a stamp with a title. That is not the machine's doing. That is a choice your team keeps making, one convenient meeting at a time. You and your pod can still choose where the human decision happens. Not everywhere — that is vanity, and you will exhaust yourselves. But somewhere real: the room where a person's future is actually decided, not merely processed. Name that room. Then defend it, together, on purpose.

The team is not short on information about the tool — they are avoiding a choice already in front of them, so coaching carries most of the weight.

What’s really going on

You still matter wherever a person's worth, fitness, or future is decided. The machine can sort and predict. It cannot stand in front of someone and choose what they deserve. Give it every task before that moment. Keep that one for yourself, and say so out loud to your team.

A moveBefore your next review cycle, list with your team which decisions the AI may inform and which it may never make alone. Write it down.
A moveWhen a report flags someone, meet that person before you read the machine's summary of them.
A moveAsk each teammate this week: 'What judgment call did you make today that a screen could not?' If no one can answer, say that plainly.
A moveRefuse one convenient automation this month — the one that saves the most time. Notice what comes back to you when you do.
A movePut your name, not the system's, on any decision that changes someone's job, pay, or standing.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Your team can name, specifically, which decisions still require a human in the room.
  • You catch yourself before rubber-stamping a machine's judgment about a person.
  • Your pod has a written line between what the system may recommend and what only you may decide.
  • You feel less managed by the tool and more responsible for the people it watches.
