What If I'm Not Ready for This Job?

You are afraid of a job that does not exist yet. The version in your head — where you fail, where they find out, where you can't keep up — that version is not real. It is a story you are telling yourself, and you are treating it like proof. Here is what is real: you were chosen for this. Someone with more information than your fear looked at your work and decided you could do it. That is evidence. Your dread is not. With others beside you, this gets easier to see. Alone, your mind runs the worst case on a loop. Say it out loud to people doing the same climb, and it shrinks to what it is — a normal fear, not a verdict.

The pattern itself needs brief naming, but the real work is action — practicing the next task instead of rehearsing failure.

What’s really going on

You are not being asked to handle the job in your imagination. You are being asked to handle today's task. Readiness is not a feeling you wait for — it is built by doing the next thing in front of you. Stop auditioning for a future that has not arrived.

A moveWrite down the exact task in front of you this week — not the whole job, one task. Do that.
A moveList three things you have already done that this job required you to be able to do. Read the list before you start work each morning.
A moveTell your pod the specific fear, not the vague one — 'I don't know how to run the first meeting,' not 'I'm not ready.' Specific fears get specific help.
A moveAsk one person on your pod what they were afraid of before they started something hard. Notice they survived it.
A moveWhen the worst-case thought comes, ask: is this happening now, or am I rehearsing something that hasn't happened? Name it. Return to the task.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop treating imagined failure as evidence and start acting on what's actually in front of you
  • You can name your specific fear instead of a vague sense of dread
  • You have a short list of proof — things you've already done — to counter the doubt
  • You've practiced saying the fear out loud and found it smaller than it felt alone
