Who am I if I'm not my job?
You built years around a role. Now something has shaken it — a layoff, a promotion that didn't land, a quiet morning with no meeting to run — and you reach for yourself and find nothing there. This is not a flaw in you. It is what happens when a person lets one thing stand in for the whole self. Here is the honest part: the job was never you. It was material you worked with — like clay to a potter. Take the clay away and the potter still has hands, still has judgment, still chooses what to make next. That is what's left when the job is gone. It was there all along, under the title. You are not doing this alone, and that is useful. Others in your pod are circling the same empty space. Use them. They can see your choices — your actual choices, not your assignments — more clearly than you can. Ask them what they notice. Then do the same for them.
You are not your title. A title is work handed to you; you are the one who does it, and the one who chooses how. You will not find yourself by searching your resume. You find yourself by watching what you choose when no job is telling you what to choose.
What changes unlock by starting
- You can name three things about yourself that have nothing to do with your work.
- You stop going blank when someone asks what you do.
- Your pod can describe you by your choices, not your title.
- You have a short, honest list of things you choose — not things that were assigned to you.
