Why do complex systems still trip me up on inspections?
You can walk a building and see what is simple at a glance. Foundations, walls, roofs - these hold still long enough for you to read them. Complex systems do not hold still. Electrical runs behind drywall. Ducts cross floors you cannot see. You call this a gap in your skill. It is really a gap in your method. No one holds an entire complex system in their head at once. The people who look confident have simply mapped it in pieces, over time, often with help. You have not yet built that map. That is not weakness. That is the next task in front of you. You are not doing this alone, and you should stop acting like you are. Your team has people who know pieces you do not. Use them. Trace the system together, piece by piece, until the group holds what no one person could hold alone.
You can assess a simple building because you learned it piece by piece. Complex systems trip you because you still try to hold them whole, in your head, alone. Stop. Break each system into parts. Trace one part at a time, with your team, until you can explain it without notes. That is the whole method.
What changes unlock by starting
- You can name the exact point in a system where your knowledge stops.
- Your pod treats 'I don't know' as the next task, not a failure.
- You build a shared map of complex systems that outlasts any one person's memory.
- Assessments speed up, because the group carries the knowledge, not just you.
