Why do I carry the full weight of saying who can eat safely?

You sit with someone's ability to swallow in your hands. One wrong call is not a small thing, and you feel that weight every day. It does not get lighter with experience — it just gets more familiar. Here is what is true: you do not control what happens after your decision. You control your attention, your knowledge, and the honesty of your judgment in that moment. Once you have used those well, the outcome is not yours to hold. You were never meant to carry this alone, and no one asked you to. Your team exists to check your judgment, share the weight, and catch what you miss. If the weight ever becomes more than steady worry — if it keeps you from sleeping, eating, or working — talk to someone outside your team too. That is wisdom, not weakness.

What’s really going on

You do not carry it alone, though it feels that way. Your job is to judge well with what you know now — not to guarantee what happens after. Make the call. Write down your reasoning. Hand the rest to your team. That is the whole of your power here.

A moveWrite down the specific evidence behind each hard call, before the shift ends.
A moveAt handoff, say out loud what you controlled and what you did not — let the team hear both.
A moveWhen a decision keeps you up at night, ask yourself one question: did I use what I knew at the time? If yes, set it down.
A moveBuild a weekly habit with your team to review hard calls together, not only the ones that went wrong.
A moveIn every debrief, separate the judgment made from the outcome that followed.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You make decisions faster because you trust your process, not your mood.
  • You stop carrying outcomes you never controlled in the first place.
  • Your team shares the weight because reviewing hard calls together becomes routine.
  • You sleep better, because the decision closes once it is made with care.
