Knowledge + Guidance

Why do I carry the weight of knowing everyone's worth on paper?

You know what the engineer earns next to the designer. You know who is underpaid and who is overpaid, and you had a hand in deciding it. Most days, that knowledge sits in you alone. You did not take on this weight so you could feel noble about carrying it. You took it because someone had to decide with fairness instead of carelessness. The weight is not proof of your goodness. It is proof of your power. Use it, or admit you are only hoarding it. Your team feels this too, even though the numbers live with you. Share the standard, not just the secret. A comp philosophy anyone can question is lighter to carry than one only you can defend.

You already know how to build fair comp — what you lack is practice turning private knowledge into shared standards, so this calls for action more than instruction.

What’s really going on

You built the system because you see clearly and others cannot. The weight is not punishment — it is the cost of that clarity. Stop treating it as a burden to survive and start treating it as a duty to discharge. Speak the truth your numbers already hold, or the knowledge curdles into guilt.

A moveWrite the comp philosophy down in one page — the rules, not just the numbers — and show it to your team before they have to ask.
A movePick one person's number each week and ask yourself plainly: could I defend this to their face? If not, change it now.
A moveShare the band and the reasoning with whoever it affects, even when it is uncomfortable. Silence protects you, not them.
A moveFind one peer outside your pod who holds the same kind of knowledge. Walk through your hardest calls with them monthly.
A moveStop keeping the full picture only in your head. Put the framework in writing so the decision doesn't rest on your memory alone.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A written comp philosophy you can hand to anyone who asks.
  • Less private anxiety, because the standard carries the weight instead of your memory.
  • A team that trusts the process because they can actually see it.
  • Fewer nights spent defending, in your head, a number no one else can see.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
