Knowledge + Guidance

Why do I feel absent at work even though I look fine?

You perform the role well enough that no one asks questions. That is not an accident — you built competence that runs without you. Now it runs without you, permanently, and you have mistaken that for success. This is not a mood. It is a pattern you have let continue because it is comfortable and because it is invisible to everyone but you. Months pass easily when nothing forces a reckoning. You do not need a diagnosis. You need to notice, today, what you actually attend to — and choose, in small moments, to be where your body is. That choice is available to you right now, not someday.

The person already understands their situation; what they lack is the practice of noticing and the will to act, so guidance dominates.

What’s really going on

You have not vanished. You have been running on habit, and habit is efficient — it does not need you present to function. That is the problem. Your body shows up; your attention does not. Today, notice where your mind actually goes during the hours you are supposedly working. That is where you have been living.

A movePick one meeting today. Before it starts, name out loud where your attention usually drifts during meetings like it.
A moveChoose one task this week and do it with your full attention, start to finish, with your phone out of reach.
A moveAt the end of each day, write one sentence: where was I actually, today, for most of the hours?
A moveStop crediting yourself for competence that runs on autopilot. Ask what you would do differently if someone were watching closely.
A movePick one person you lead or work with. Have one real conversation with them this week — no agenda, full attention.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You can name, specifically, where your attention goes instead of your work.
  • You complete at least one task per week with full presence, not habit.
  • You stop mistaking smooth performance for genuine engagement.
  • You have one honest conversation with someone you lead, rather than a managed one.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
