Why do I keep running toward what others flee?

You are the one who walks into the room everyone else is leaving. The burning building, the collapsing deal, the ward with no beds left. You did not plan to become this person. You noticed one day that you were already moving forward while everyone else moved back. This work asks for things you did not put on the list when you signed up. It asks your body to run on broken sleep. It asks the people who love you to compete with an emergency that always wins. It asks your team to trust you will not burn out and leave them exposed at the worst moment. You are not the only one running into this. There is a team beside you, or there should be. The question now is not whether you can keep going in — it is whether you and the people who go in with you have built anything that keeps you standing.

You already know how to run toward danger; what's missing is the practice of counting the cost and building team safeguards, which is trained through action, not explained through facts.

What’s really going on

You run toward it because you are built for it, or because you made yourself that way. That is not virtue on its own — it is a tool. The real question is not whether you should keep running in. It is whether you and the people beside you have built the discipline to survive doing it again and again.

A moveAfter the next hard call, sit with your team for ten minutes before anyone goes home. Not to review the outcome — to say out loud what it cost each of you.
A moveTell one person in your pod the actual numbers: hours slept this week, days since you took a full day off. Let them do the arithmetic you keep refusing to do.
A moveBefore the next crisis, agree with your team on one signal that means 'I am past my limit' — and agree now that no one is allowed to ignore it.
A moveAsk the person who loves you outside this work one direct question: what have they given up that you never counted? Write down exactly what they say.
A moveChoose one shift or one call this month and let someone else take it. Pay attention to what you feel when you do. That feeling is information, not weakness.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop mistaking exhaustion for dedication.
  • Your team has a working signal for 'stop,' used before someone breaks instead of after.
  • The people who live with you know exactly what this work costs, because you told them plainly.
  • You can name why you run toward it, without flattering yourself, and check if that reason still holds.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
