Why do I miss just being handed a problem?
You were promoted for being good at one thing. Now you spend your days doing another. That is not an insult. It is what happens when you are good at your job. But you keep comparing the mess of mentoring to the cleanliness of a closed ticket, and the mess always loses. You think you miss coding. You do not. You miss the feeling of finishing something that was fully yours to control. A person is never fully in your control. That is not a flaw in the new job. That is the new job. Your team is the system now, and no one builds a system alone. Say this plainly to the people around you — your pod, your partner, whoever is close enough to notice you grieving a job you no longer have. If the weight of it feels heavier than a bad week should, talk to someone outside your work too.
You are not failing at leadership. You are mourning a smaller job you already finished. Coding gave you a clean finish line; people do not. Stop measuring new work with an old ruler. The problem in front of you now is a person, not a bug. Choose to treat that as real work.
What changes unlock by starting
- You stop treating discomfort with the new work as proof you're doing it wrong.
- You can name one junior who solved something hard because you stepped back.
- Your pod starts treating mentoring as real engineering work, not a distraction from it.
- You spend less energy mourning the old job and more energy building the new one.
