Why do lonely or difficult clients still drain me?

You have gotten better at this. Most clients, you handle with ease now. But a few still leave you empty — the lonely one who wants more than the work, the difficult one who tests your patience. You call this their fault. Look closer. A lonely client is not asking for your service. They are asking for your company, and you keep giving it, past the point the job requires. A difficult client is not harder work — they are the same work, plus your reaction to them. Both drain you because you never decided, in advance, what you owe and what you don't. This is not a client problem. It is a limits problem. Your pod can see this pattern in you faster than you can see it in yourself — that is why you do this work together, not alone.

The core failure is unexamined habit, not missing information, so the page leans heavily on practice and pod feedback rather than teaching.

What’s really going on

The client is not draining you. You are draining yourself by giving more than the work requires, and not noticing. You connect with most people now — that proves you can manage this too. Choose, in advance, what you owe each person. Stop giving the rest for free.

A moveBefore each session with a draining client, decide out loud what you will give and for how long.
A moveAfter the session, write one line: what did I give that was not asked for?
A moveName the lonely clients separately from the difficult ones — they drain you for different reasons, and need different limits.
A moveBring your worst case this week to your pod. Let them tell you the pattern, not just hear your complaint.
A moveEnd one session exactly on time, even when it feels unkind. Treat it as a test of your own discipline, not theirs.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You catch yourself giving extra before the session ends, not after.
  • You leave client meetings with energy left over, most days.
  • Your pod can describe your pattern back to you in one sentence.
  • Difficult clients stop feeling like a personal failure.
