Why do swallowing evaluations and safety checks scare me?

Be honest about what is happening. You are not overreacting. A wrong call here can hurt someone. Your mind is doing exactly what it should — treating this like it matters. But notice what you do control. You do not control whether a case is hard. You do not control whether you will ever feel fully ready. You control how you prepare, whether you speak up when uncertain, and whether you ask for a second set of eyes before you act alone. You are not doing this work by yourself. You have a team. Carrying the fear in silence, as if asking for help were weakness, is the choice making this harder than it needs to be. Use the people around you — that is what they are there for.

The fear is mostly behavioral and needs coaching toward action and team use, with a smaller dose of framework for separating what's controllable from what isn't.

What’s really going on

You are afraid because the stakes are real — someone's safety depends on your call. That fear will not go away, and it should not. Your job is not to feel calm. Your job is to prepare well, say when you're unsure, and use your team before you decide alone.

A moveBefore your next evaluation, write two short lists: what you alone control, and what you don't. Keep the list in your pocket.
A moveWhen you're unsure mid-evaluation, say 'I'm not certain' out loud to your team instead of guessing quietly.
A moveAfter every hard case, sit with your pod for five minutes: what went well, what you'd change.
A moveBuild a short routine before each evaluation — steady your breathing and your hands, not your feelings. Feelings can stay.
A moveAsk for a second opinion on your hardest cases, and call that good judgment, not failure.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop treating fear as proof you're unqualified.
  • You ask your team for help before you freeze, not after.
  • Your evaluations get steadier because you prepare instead of avoiding the hard ones.
  • You build real confidence through repetition, not by waiting to feel fearless.
