Why Do the Bad Calls Still Weigh on Me?

You can read a room. You can read a fire. You know the exact move when things go sideways, and most days you make it. That skill is real. No one doubts it. But some calls don't end clean. Someone gets hurt. Something is lost. You replay it at 2 a.m. while your team sleeps. That replay is work too — unpaid, unscheduled, and unseen. You do it alone because no one built a place to put it down. The fix is not to stop caring, and it is not to toughen up. The fix is to stop treating the weight as a secret. Your pod carries the same weight, even if they've never said so. Say it out loud, and the load changes shape — from a thing you hide to a thing you share.

This problem needs little explaining and much doing — the teaching is brief, the real work is speaking the weight aloud and building the habit with others.

What’s really going on

You carry two jobs. One is the fire in front of you. The other is the fire that already burned — the calls that went wrong. No shift ends that second job. Name it out loud to your team. What stays hidden stays heavy. What you speak, you can share.

A moveSay the call's name out loud to your team within 24 hours — not every detail, just that it landed on you.
A moveChoose one person in your pod to tell the full version to, instead of carrying it to everyone or no one.
A moveSet a hard stop when you leave the scene: name one sentence that marks the shift as over, even if the weight isn't.
A moveAt your next debrief, ask the team: 'What's still sitting with you from last week?' Then wait for the answer.
A moveIf the weight doesn't lift after speaking it, take it to someone trained for it — a counselor, a chaplain, a peer line. That is not weakness. It is the next right action.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop carrying the worst calls alone.
  • Your team knows which calls are still live in you, not just closed on paper.
  • You have a habit, not just an idea, for closing out a hard call.
  • You can tell the difference between weight you can set down and weight that needs more help.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
