Why do the denied borrowers still weigh on me?

You can guide most borrowers now. That skill is real. But the desperate ones, the ones denied anyway, still sit in your chest at night. You replay the meeting. You wonder what you missed. Here is what you are doing without noticing: judging your counsel by someone else's decision. The underwriter decides. The bank decides. You do not. Your task was honesty, clarity, and respect, delivered every time, regardless of result. You have been grading yourself on the wrong test. Your pod feels this too, even the ones who say nothing. Carrying it alone is the actual mistake here, not the feeling itself. Bring the hard cases into the open. That is what the pod is for.

The core confusion is simple to name, but untangling it from guilt takes repeated practice with others, so guidance leads.

What’s really going on

That weight is not proof you failed them. It is proof you measured your work by their outcome, not your effort. You do not decide approvals. You only choose what you say, how clearly, and whether you stay honest when news is bad. Carry that. Set down the rest.

A moveAfter every denied case, write two lists: what was in your control, what was not. Read only the first list aloud to your pod.
A moveBefore a hard conversation, decide what you owe the borrower: honesty, clarity, respect. Decide what you do not owe them: a different outcome.
A moveWhen a case keeps returning to your mind uninvited, bring it to your pod within two days. Do not sit with it alone past that point.
A moveSeparate the debrief from the grief. Review the file for lessons first. Only then let yourself feel what you feel.
A moveName one borrower each week whose outcome you cannot change. Say out loud that you choose to stop carrying it.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop losing sleep over decisions that were never yours to make.
  • Your pod builds a shared habit of sorting what's controllable, case by case.
  • You give steadier counsel, because you aren't bracing against guilt while you speak.
  • The hard cases still ache, but they stop following you home.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
