Why do we rank each other's work instead of respecting it all?
You work with others, and somewhere in your group there is a quiet ranking. Some jobs get praised. Some get a polite nod and a faster change of subject. Nobody says this out loud, but everyone feels it. This ranking is not forced on you by the world. You and your teammates built it, task by task, comment by comment. Every time someone says "at least I'm not doing that job," the rank gets a little more real. You can also take it apart, the same way — together, on purpose. The work does not know it is low or high. A person decided that, and a group agreed to believe it. Notice this, and you already have power over it.
Rank is something you add, not something the work has in it. Strip away the title and look only at this: was it done with care, on time, without complaint? That is the whole measure. Choose to judge the work itself, not its label — and ask your team to do the same.
What changes unlock by starting
- Your team names its hidden ranking instead of living inside it unspoken.
- You catch yourself mid-judgment and correct it, rather than after the damage is done.
- The group builds one shared standard — care and effort — instead of several competing ones.
- Teammates doing less-praised work start hearing that it is seen and valued.
