Why does every hard problem end up on my desk?

Everyone sends you the impossible ticket because you always take it. You answer fast, you look good, the problem disappears — for now. But nothing on your team gets stronger. You are the single point of failure, and you built it yourself, one rescue at a time. This is not a compliment, though it is dressed as one. It is a cage you made comfortable. Every time you solve what someone else could have struggled through, you confirm the lesson: don't bother trying, just wait for the one who knows. That is not a team. That is a dependency with your name on it. What is in your power is not their learning — you cannot make anyone grow. What is in your power is your own response the next time the ticket arrives. You can choose to withhold the fast answer. You can choose a question instead of a fix. Start there, with the next one.

What’s really going on

You made yourself the fastest hand in the room, so they stopped using theirs. That is not flattery — it is a habit you built, ticket by ticket. The fix is not more speed. It is refusing to solve what someone has not yet tried to solve. Hand it back. Ask what they attempted first.

A moveWhen the next hard ticket lands, ask 'what have you tried?' before you touch it.
A moveSet a rule: no ticket reaches you until someone has attempted it and written down what they tried.
A moveWrite your diagnostic steps down once, in public, so the reasoning isn't locked in your head.
A moveName the pattern out loud in your next team meeting and ask the team to route differently.
A movePick one ticket this week and hand it back unsolved, with a question instead of an answer.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Fewer tickets land on your desk because others learn to clear the first layer themselves.
  • Your team builds real skill instead of waiting on you to arrive.
  • You are no longer the single point of failure when you're out sick or on leave.
  • You get back hours for the work only you can actually do.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
