Why does my team still wait on me for every decision?

You say you've delegated the work. But you still ask to see it before it goes out. You still answer questions they could answer themselves. That is not delegation — that is supervision with extra steps. You have not let go. You have only moved the work closer to you and called it someone else's. This costs more than your own time. Every time you decide for them, you train them to stop deciding. You are not developing people — you are keeping them dependent, and calling it care. A team that cannot act without you is a team you built, correction by correction. This is within your power to change today. Not their training, not a better system — your willingness to let a decision go wrong in someone else's hands, and let that be the price of their growth. Choose what you will stop touching.

Most people already understand delegation in theory; what's missing is the nerve to act on it, so this leans toward coaching over teaching.

What’s really going on

You are the bottleneck because you still decide what belongs to someone else. Delegation is not handing over tasks — it is handing over judgment, and letting people be wrong sometimes. Choose three decisions this week that are not yours to make. Then stop making them.

A moveName three decisions you currently make that someone else should own. Write them down. Hand them over fully this week — no review, no sign-off.
A moveWhen someone brings you a question they could answer, ask 'What would you do?' before you answer. Make them answer first, every time.
A moveLet one decision go wrong this month. Do not rescue it before it fails. After, ask what they would do differently — not what you would have done.
A moveSet a standing rule with your team: decisions under a stated size or risk never reach you. Name that line together, out loud.
A moveCount how many questions reach you in a week. If the number is not falling, you are still doing their job for them.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Decisions get made without waiting on you, and most of them hold up fine.
  • Your team brings you finished judgments instead of open questions.
  • You find real time for the work only you can do.
  • Someone makes a call you would not have made — and it works.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
