Why does planning my career feel like too much to handle?

Here is what you are actually doing: you sit down to plan your career, and instead of one task, you load ten years of decisions into your head at the same time. Then you call that weight "complexity" and feel crushed by it. But the weight is not in the task. It is in how you are carrying it. No person plans a whole career in one sitting. Not one. What you can do is choose the next right action — one conversation, one application, one hour of honest thought — and do that. The rest does not need you yet. You already know this when you are calm. The trouble is you keep testing yourself against the whole mountain instead of the next step on the path. Stop testing yourself against the mountain.

What’s really going on

You are not overwhelmed by the plan. You are overwhelmed because you are trying to hold every step in your mind at once. No mind does that well. Pick one piece. Work that piece today. Set the rest down — it will wait for you.

A moveWrite down everything crowding your mind about this, in one list, with no order and no judgment.
A movePick the single item on that list you could act on this week. Cross out the rest for now — not forever, for now.
A moveName the one next action for that item. Not the goal. The action. 'Send the email,' not 'fix my career.'
A moveDo that action before you let yourself plan anything further ahead.
A moveWhen the next wave of overwhelm comes, return to this same move: list, pick one, act. Do not re-invent your approach each time.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A written list that gets the tangle out of your head and onto paper
  • One clear, small action you can take this week instead of a vague plan you can't start
  • A repeatable method for breaking down any future overwhelm, not just this one
  • Less time spent spinning, more time spent moving
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
