Why does rapport still feel forced if I know the techniques?
You learned the moves — mirror their tone, ask about their weekend, nod at the right points. You run them correctly. And still it feels hollow, because it is hollow. You are not in the conversation. You are watching yourself have the conversation. This is not a flaw in the technique. It is what happens when attention is split between performing rapport and actually being present. The client can feel the gap, even if they cannot name it. People always know when they are being managed. You cannot control whether this client warms to you. That was never within your power. What is within your power is where you put your attention for the next ten minutes. Put it on them, not on yourself.
Technique was never the problem. You are performing a method instead of attending to the person across from you. Rapport is not a skill you deploy — it is attention you give, plainly and without calculation. Stop managing the conversation. Choose, right now, to actually listen to what this client says.
What changes unlock by starting
- You stop narrating your own performance while the client is talking.
- Conversations take less effort, because you are no longer running two tracks at once.
- Clients give you real answers instead of rehearsed ones.
- You can tell the difference between a connection you made and a script you executed.
