Why does someone else's win make me feel like I lost?

You see a colleague praised, promoted, celebrated — and something in you tightens. You say you are happy for them. You are not. This feeling is common. It is not proof you are a bad person. It is information, if you will read it. The comparison is doing you a service you did not ask for. It lets you avoid a harder question by making the problem about them instead of about your own choices. Find out what that question is, and the resentment has nothing left to protect. Your pod will feel this too, maybe about each other. Do not hide it from them. What you cannot see in yourself, they can often see in you — and you in them.

The reader already feels the resentment; what they need is practice naming the fear it hides, so guidance leads over explanation.

What’s really going on

Resentment is not about them. It is a guard dog, protecting you from a question you do not want to ask: am I doing work that matters to me, or just keeping score? Name the fear under the anger. Then do your own work. The resentment loses its job.

A moveSay the resentment out loud to your pod the same day you feel it, before it hardens into a story about them.
A moveWrite down what their success actually cost them — the hours, the risks, the years. Decide if you were willing to pay that.
A moveAsk yourself directly: what does their win mean about me, if it means anything at all? Write the answer, even the ugly one.
A movePick one piece of work this week that is yours alone, not measured against anyone else. Finish it.
A moveWhen resentment returns, treat it as a signal, not a verdict. Ask what it is protecting you from this time.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You catch resentment early, before it turns into gossip, withdrawal, or quiet sabotage.
  • You can name the fear under the comparison instead of just carrying it around.
  • Your pod trusts you more because you say the hard thing instead of hiding it.
  • You spend less energy tracking others and more energy on work that is actually yours.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
