Why Keep Telling the Truth When It Barely Pays and We're Attacked?

You signed up to tell the truth. What you got was thin pay, hostile replies, and an industry that looks like it is dying under your feet. That is not a betrayal of the work. For people who choose this work now, that is the work. Look closely at what you are actually mourning. It is not the truth-telling — you can still do that today, with the people beside you. You are mourning the applause, the stability, the respect you thought would come attached to it. Those were never yours to command, and no amount of good work will force them to appear. Your pod cannot fix the industry. It can stop any one of you from carrying this alone, from mistaking attack for proof of failure, or from quitting on a bad day and calling it clarity. If the attacks are costing you sleep, safety, or your footing, say so to someone outside the pod who is trained to help — that is not weakness, it is accuracy.

The confusion is philosophical — what is and isn't within your control — but the daily work is sustaining people through attack and scarcity, so guidance leads.

What’s really going on

You did not choose this work for safety or thanks. The pay, the attacks, the dying industry — none of that was ever yours to control. What is yours: the next thing you write, how you treat each other today, and whether you quit before the work is done.

A moveEach week, write two lists: what happened to you, and what you did. Keep them separate.
A moveWhen attacked, read it once. Then ask the pod: is there one fact here I must correct — or none?
A moveAgree, as a pod, on a fixed, modest line for 'enough pay' — not what you deserve, what lets you continue.
A moveEach month, name one piece of work you'd defend regardless of what it earned or who praised it.
A moveBefore anyone quits, make them say it out loud to the pod first, not just to themselves.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop treating hostility as proof you are wrong.
  • Your pod has a working line between what to fight and what to let pass.
  • You keep producing work you would defend to yourself, pay and praise aside.
  • You know when continuing is a real choice, and when it is only habit.
