Why would someone choose us over the competitors we track?

You track every move your competitors make. It feels like work. It is the easy work — it asks nothing of you except attention. The hard question sits underneath: why would a customer pick you, and keep picking you, when they could go elsewhere? If your team cannot answer this together, in one sentence, you have no moat. You have a spreadsheet of other people's choices. A moat is not secret information about rivals. It is something your team builds that cannot be copied by reading your website — a way of working together, a promise you actually keep. That is made, not found.

The concept of a moat is simple to explain; the real work is forcing the team to confront that they haven't built one, which takes coaching, not more teaching.

What’s really going on

You do not need more data on your competitors. You need one sentence your whole team can say: why someone chooses you, and why they stay. That sentence has to live inside your team, built by you — not borrowed from watching others. Build that first. Tracking is not a strategy.

A moveWrite, together, one sentence: 'Customers choose us because ___, and stay because ___.' Do it now, before more research.
A moveList everything you do that a competitor could copy in a week. Cross all of it off your list of 'strategy.'
A moveName one thing your team does together that nobody can copy without becoming you.
A moveCancel one competitor-tracking meeting this month. Use that time to build the thing only you offer.
A moveAsk each teammate alone: 'why would you personally choose us?' Compare the answers out loud. The gaps are your real work.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Your team has one shared sentence for why customers choose and stay with you.
  • You can name, specifically, what you do that can't be copied in a week.
  • You spend less time watching rivals and more time building what they can't take.
  • You leave with one concrete action to close the gap between you and a real moat.
