You can't quit a game or app that has you hooked

There is a game or app you cannot put down — it pulls you back again and again, eating your hours and your focus, and every time you resolve to quit you find yourself back in it within a day. You feel powerless against it, and ashamed that a thing on a screen has such a hold on you.

What’s really going on

Let us take the shame out of this and see it clearly. It was built by many clever hands to hold you — designed deliberately to be as hard as possible to put down, so you are one mind against the concentrated cleverness of many aimed at your staying, and your struggle is a real contest, not simple weakness. Name the real need it is feeding — progress, escape, achievement, connection, relief — for it offers cheaply something you were genuinely hungry for, and the hook loosens as that need is met elsewhere, since a hunger fed only by the screen always sends you back. And remove it rather than resist it — you will not reliably out-willpower a thing built to beat willpower, so delete it, block it, make returning genuinely hard, sparing yourself a battle you were engineered to lose. What is not at hand cannot hold you. What does the app or game give you that you keep going back for?
