You were the promising one — the talented child everyone expected great things from — and now you feel you have failed that early promise, become ordinary, betrayed the gifted young person you were. The early promise may still be alive, only unspent — talent does not expire, and the gifts that showed early are likely still present, dormant beneath years of not being used rather than dead, so the promise may still be there to fulfill, later than expected but not impossible. And make now for its own sake, not to redeem the past — creating to redeem a failed promise is heavy with pressure, so set down the burden of vindication and let your making be light, done for the worth of the making itself rather than to prove the old praise right.
