You're blocked and nothing will come
You sit down to create and nothing comes — the ideas will not flow, the work will not move, and you stare at the blankness feeling empty and stuck. You are creatively blocked, unable to produce anything, and you do not know whether the well has run dry or what is stopping the work from coming.
Let us look at what is really happening, because a block is rarely the simple emptiness it feels like. A block is often the mind protecting you from something — a wall thrown up to keep you from saying what you have to say, guarding against a harsh standard or the exposure of showing your work, so you do not overcome it by pushing harder against the wall but by asking what it is protecting you from and addressing that. Lower the stakes until the work can move again — much blockage comes from the thing growing too important and freighted, so make something small and unimportant, a private experiment that does not matter, and under lowered stakes the frozen creativity often flows again. And refill the well by taking things in — if it is a genuine emptiness, the well is not broken, only drained, and refills by reading and observing and absorbing the world, so step back from producing and spend time filling. Which does it feel like — a wall, too-high stakes, or an empty well?
