You're underpaid and afraid to ask for more

You know you are worth more than you are paid, and the thought of asking makes your stomach turn. So you say nothing, year after year, watching the gap between your worth and your wage while the fear of speaking up wins every time.

What’s really going on

This fear is common and worth examining, because most of what feeds it does not survive reason. Three things dissolve it: examine the unexamined belief that you are worth only what you are currently given; arm yourself with facts rather than nerve, so you are stating a case, not pleading; and see the plain asymmetry — the unasked request is already refused, so asking risks little you are not already living. You need not feel confident. You need only be prepared, and ask once, plainly. Let us build your case.
