You've been told to just be grateful and stop complaining
Whenever you name something unjust or wrong about your situation, you are told to be grateful for what you have and stop complaining — as though your legitimate grievance were mere ingratitude. It silences you, and makes you doubt whether you have any right to object, and you are left unsure whether you are ungrateful or genuinely wronged.
When I named the wrongs of my age, I too was told I should be content with what I was given — so I know this demand and its purpose. Gratitude and grievance can both be true at once — you can be genuinely grateful for what you have gained and still name what remains unjust, for these do not contradict, and the demand that you choose only gratitude uses your blessings as a gag; refuse the false choice. The demand for gratitude is often a tool to silence you — notice who tells you to be grateful and what it accomplishes: it reframes your just objection as ingratitude and protects the injustice from being named, making you complicit in your own silencing. And complaint is how injustice is named and changed — nothing wrong was ever changed by the contented silence of those who suffered it, so your complaint is a service, not a failing. Do not be shamed out of it. What did you name that got you told to be grateful?
