Knowledge + Guidance

Am I building my own career, or just his?

You work close to someone powerful. His decisions move the room. Yours mostly serve his. This is not shameful — it is simply the shape of the job you took. The question is not whether you are in his shadow. You are. The question is what you are doing with the light that reaches you there. Most people in this position flatter themselves in one of two directions. Either they tell themselves 'I am really the one who makes it work' — a private grievance that changes nothing. Or they tell themselves 'my time will come later' — a promise no one made them. Both are ways of not looking directly at today. You do not control whether he shares credit, whether the org chart moves, whether history remembers your name beside his. You control what you build in yourself while you are here: which judgments you are trusted to make alone, which relationships are yours and not his, which skills you could take out the door tomorrow and sell. Examine that. Nothing else is yours to examine.

What’s really going on

Stop measuring yourself by his shadow's size. Ask instead: what skill, judgment, or relationship have I sharpened this year that leaves with me if he does? Name it in writing. If you cannot name one, you are not building — you are borrowing light that is not yours to keep.

A moveList every task you did this month. Mark each one: 'leaves with me' or 'stays with him.' Be honest — do not credit yourself for tasks only he could authorize.
A movePick one decision this week that is genuinely yours to make, not his to approve. Make it without asking. See what happens.
A moveWrite down the name of one person who trusts you, not your position. If you cannot name one outside his circle, build that relationship this month.
A moveAsk yourself plainly: if he left tomorrow, what could I still do? Write the answer down. Update it every quarter.
A moveStop waiting for him to notice your value. Instead, build one thing — a skill, a document, a relationship — that has value whether he notices or not.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A clear, written answer to whether you are growing or only reflecting his light
  • At least one decision you now make on your own authority, not borrowed
  • A shorter list of grievances and a longer list of concrete skills
  • A habit of checking this quarterly instead of wondering constantly
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
