Identity and community — who we are in belonging

Ubuntu teaches that a person is a person through other persons — the self is not prior to community but constituted by it. Western individualism reverses the equation, but most humans, most of the time, have known themselves primarily through their belonging: tribe, kin, congregation, nation. The examined life asks which communities are sources of genuine recognition and which are extractive — demanding conformity in exchange for the illusion of belonging.
