Impact investing and patient capital

Impact investing asks whether capital can be deployed to produce social benefit without abandoning the expectation of financial return — a reasonable question that the evidence answers with qualified yes. The risk is the capture of the concept by marketing: 'impact' becoming a label applied to investments whose actual effects are marginal or unmeasured. Patient capital, properly deployed, can reach places conventional finance cannot; the word alone does not accomplish this.
