How professional peer groups can become competitive rather than supportive

My MBA cohort started a monthly dinner group to stay connected after graduation but it's turned into everyone trying to impress each other with their career updates and I find myself exaggerating my own progress to keep up. We all seem to be performing success rather than actually supporting each other through the challenges of our careers.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

The group has unconsciously shifted from authentic connection to status competition, defeating its original purpose of mutual support.
