When research partners compete for the same position while collaborating

My research partner and I have been working on this protein folding project for eighteen months and we keep getting results that contradict each other's findings but neither of us wants to admit our methodology might be flawed because we're both up for the same tenure track position next year. We've started presenting our data separately at conferences instead of as a collaboration and I can feel us protecting our individual reputations instead of solving the actual scientific problem.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Two scientists are allowing career competition to compromise their shared commitment to rigorous methodology and honest scientific inquiry.
