How to handle a fellow NCO who won't accept help with a struggling soldier

My squad leader is covering for one of our soldiers who's clearly struggling with something serious - missing formations, performance dropping - and won't let me help address it because he thinks he can handle it alone. I'm watching both of them suffer and I don't know if stepping in makes me a good NCO or if it undermines his authority with his people.
