How professional peer groups develop unspoken status hierarchies

Our MBA cohort has stayed close for five years but there's this weird dynamic where the people who are doing well professionally dominate every conversation and those who are struggling just go quiet. I'm somewhere in the middle and I watch this happen at every reunion and dinner but no one acknowledges that we've basically created a hierarchy based on external success.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group that began as equals has unconsciously organized itself around external markers of success, silencing valuable perspectives and creating artificial distance.
