When freelance journalist support groups become performative networking

The other freelancers in my journalism cohort and I started meeting monthly to share leads and support each other but it's become this weird performance where everyone pretends their work is going great and we've stopped talking about the real struggles. I want the community but I don't know if anyone else is willing to be honest about how hard this actually is or if we're just networking now.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Professional community has shifted from genuine mutual support to competitive self-presentation, defeating its original purpose.
