Scenario

When engineering partnerships develop unplanned role divisions

The three of us started this mechanical engineering consultancy as equals but over the past year it's become clear that I'm doing most of the business development while they focus on the technical work, and now clients see me as 'the business guy' even though I want to stay hands-on with design. We haven't talked about how this shift happened or whether we're okay with it, but it's affecting how we price projects and assign work.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Organic role evolution has created an identity and power structure that wasn't consciously chosen by the group.
