I coordinate disaster volunteers and after every major event I watch people show up wanting to help for three days and then disappear when the real work starts, leaving the same five exhausted people to handle months of recovery work.
More people experience this than they realize.
Volunteers show up for the exciting first days and vanish before the long, hard work of recovery begins.
