When a career spent optimizing leaves you wondering what it was for

I run operations for the whole company now, and I'm good at it — I can find waste in any process and squeeze it out. But late at night I catch myself wondering what all that optimizing was really for. I spent a career making things faster and cheaper, and I can't point to one thing I made genuinely better.
