When a lifetime of research leaves you asking what changed

I can design studies now that move a whole field forward, the kind of work I dreamed about as a student. But sitting in my office late, I look back over a lifetime of papers and grants and wonder what any of it actually changed out in the world. The better my work gets, the louder that question gets.
