A patient looked up at me today, frightened, and asked what was going to happen to them, and the honest answer was that I didn't fully know. I've grown more at peace with the limits of what medicine can do. But sitting in that not-knowing beside someone who's scared, without a clean answer to offer, is still one of the hardest parts of this work.
