When budget and code keep shrinking the design you love

I sketched a building that made me proud, and then the budget meeting cut the atrium, the code review killed the open stair, and the engineer said the cantilever won't stand. By the time everyone has had their say, the thing on paper barely looks like what I saw in my head. I keep wondering if the vision ever really survives contact with the real world.
