When decades of watching the rails left me alone

I've run these lines safely for over thirty years, never a serious incident on my watch. The job asks for a constant, lonely kind of attention, and somewhere along the way that vigilance became who I am. I'm proud of the record, and I realize I've spent most of my life standing apart from people.
