I can take a tangled, complex program and steer it all the way to done, and people trust me with the hard ones. But somewhere along the way the actual engineering shrank into meetings and status updates. I miss the work I fell in love with, even as I've gotten good at managing everyone who now does it.
More people experience this than they realize.
You can drive complex programs to the finish, but the real engineering got swallowed by managing.
