When I can handle most bosses but not the hard ones

I finally figured out how to work with my old boss. She was clear and around, so I learned to read her. But now I report to someone who snaps at everything, and above him is a director I have seen twice all year. I keep waiting for direction that never comes, and I feel stuck all over again.
