When I can place the order but not manage the relationship

I can send off a purchase order and get what we need without a hitch. But when the same supplier is a months-long relationship with its own ups and downs, I am lost. Do I push on the late shipment or let it go, do I ask for a better price, I honestly do not know how to steer it.
