I found a way to run the line with four fewer people, and my boss was thrilled. But I know those four people, I've eaten lunch with them, and now my clean little number is going to end their jobs. I'm good at making things run better, and lately being good at it means quietly deciding who gets cut, and I can't shake the weight of that.
